Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Toronto-based motivational speaker and social activist, Jeff Martin, to discuss among other topics his organization Brothas from the 6, police and community relations, and restoring the image of Black fathers.
Growing up I had the opportunity to watch an entrepreneur in action.
Seeing my dad daily build his photography business, and then eventually helping at jobs throughout my time as a teenager and young adult was an awarding experience.
In 1996 a young brash, load mouth kid from the Los Angeles, California became the number one overall draft pick in the NFL draft that year. Keyshawn Johnson, the unforgettable wide receiver out of the University of Southern California was selected by the New York Jets and immediately became a polarizing figure in not just pro football, but in all of pro sports.
Grade 5, public school, 1991. I knew a kid in my class who lived in the same low income co-op as I did, but there was a noticeable difference between us both. He came to school with a new pair of kicks every week. At the time it seemed like every week, but it was probably every few months.
What’s Trending? How do we find out and why should we care? Because copying a trend is an effective way of getting people’s attention? How do we know for sure? Or maybe an individual’s uniqueness could be the key to creative effectiveness.
I hate the Golden State Warriors.
Even more, I hate Kevin Durant for joining them last year after almost beating them while being a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2016 NBA playoffs. Durant seems to have taken the phrase, “If you can’t beat’em, then join’em” literally and now stands as an NBA champion.
When I was in high school, my English teacher gave out an assignment to perform a speech in front of the entire class. We were given the freedom to talk about anything we wanted to, as long as we kept everyone awake during the presentation. As a grade 10 student in the 90’s, there wasn’t much more to think about other than music, girls, sports and clothes.
Let’s be honest.
When you’re first starting out as a blogger, digital marketer, content creator, you will not have a budget to hire a professional graphic designer to create things like your logo, website and any other creative promotional items you may need.
Loud. Obnoxious. Overbearing. Idiot. In the process of describing LaVar Ball to your friend that has been living under a rock for the last six months, there’s no shortage of words that come to mind. Ball has easily become a polarizing figure in the sports world and the hype train surrounding him and his born and bred basketball star sons doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
In the last 12 months my wife has travelled to Uganda, Chicago, New York (twice), Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the last 8 years she has hopped on a plane to go somewhere fascinating on average 2-3 times a year. During that time I have travelled with her a grand total of twice. Once on our 10 year anniversary vacation to Mexico in 2013 and to New York last year on one of her many public speaking business trips. I know what you’re thinking, and no my wife is not a serial traveller.
